Atrium hosts photography exhibition

28 August 2014 09.30 BST

(UK) - London showroom provides ideal setting for FLOS’s collaboration with Swedish photographer Carl Kleiner, during this year’s London Design Festival.

Entitled Architectural Lighting, the exhibition comprises a series of beautifully realised, abstract photographic compositions, aligned into perfect geometric grids. Each one incorporates FLOS luminaires, together with sections of coloured paper and other more industrial materials such as sandpaper, marble, wood and brass.
The photographs were originally taken for the latest catalogue of FLOS Architectural, the Architectural Lighting division of the iconic Italian manufacturer. Kleiner was commissioned by internationally acclaimed art director Omar Sosa to play with the shapes and details of new lighting products from FLOS Architectural, which is renowned for the quality of materials and technological advancements in its designs.
The images are the result of weeks of work at Kleiner’s studio in Stockholm and provide an energy-filled aesthetic thread throughout the catalogue. The product innovation of FLOS, combined with the creative flair of collaborators such as designers Antonio Citterio and Piero Lissoni, is presented a completely new, dynamic way.
FLOS CEO Piero Gandini commented, “This catalogue represents a fantastic example of how innovation and creativity always provide the basis on which FLOS works to develop its business initiatives. FLOS Architectural, headed with consummate skill by Federico Martinez Weber, represents a highly original and successful presence in today’s professional lighting sector. Working with Carl and Omar, and having the opportunity to interact with their personalities and talent, has been a source of great satisfaction and enjoyment.”
Having more in common with modernist art than promotional material, Kleiner’s photographs capture the technical detail of FLOS lighting in such an arresting narrative that displaying them large-scale in a gallery space was a natural next step.
After successfully debuting in Milan this year, this is the first time Architectural Lighting will be seen in the UK. Located in the centre of East London’s creative and tech industries, a mere minute’s walk from the iconic Silicon Roundabout, Atrium’s new showroom is perfectly placed to exhibit the photographs.

Not only is it the largest commercial specification lighting showroom in the UK, but the raw concrete walls and abundance of natural light of the 14,000sqft interior, designed by architects BDP, provide a fitting backdrop in terms of quality and scale of space for Kleiner’s striking images.
Ulysse Dormoy, Managing Director of Atrium added, “As the sole UK distributor of FLOS, Atrium is delighted to host Carl’s work during the London Design Festival. We’ve had an amazing reaction to the space since its launch earlier this year. Moving to Shoreditch was a natural progression for the business, moving us into an area already well populated by the A&D community. The showroom is an exceptional space in terms of a high-end working office, and is home to a wealth of lighting products and solutions. It is also a perfect backdrop to present an outstanding creative collaboration such as this one.”
Architectural Lighting offers an opportunity to celebrate the work of Kleiner and Sosa, not to mention the world’s greatest professional architects and lighting designers who work with FLOS. The exhibition should delight architects, interior designers and specifiers, as well as those who have a passion for great graphic design and photography.

Architectural Lighting, 15-19 September 2014 10am – 5pm
