Lightfair celebrates 20th anniversary with record breaking show

15 May 2009 10.00 BST

(USA) - Despite the gloomy economic forecast (and the rain!), the 20th annual Lightfair International (LFI) exhibition ended last week with record-breaking attendance of more than 23,000 industry professionals and conference participants.

Boasting an exhibit hall of more than 170,000 square feet, the 2009 trade show floor — the largest space in LFI’s history — was sold out, featuring 475 national and international manufacturers showcasing the latest product designs and introductions, technological advances and lighting solutions.

The biggest exhibitor drive was the influx of companies showing their newest generation of LED light engines and halogen replacement LED downlighters. In fact, the CFL producers’ stands were eerily quiet! This was reflected in the LFI Innovation Awards where many LED products scooped the top prizes.

Philips Lightolier’s Calculite Solid-State Downlights, a 4” round and square LED downlight that utilises remote phosphor technology for a consistent, uniform light, won the Most Innovative Product of the Year.

Both the Lumileds LUXEON Rebel ES, the latest proliferation of the LUXEON Rebel family of power LEDs; and the Luminus Devices’ SST-90-W 6500K white, 10 Watt, 100 lumen per watt LED; were recognised with the LFI Technical Innovation Award.

The importance of accurately measuring LEDs was also recognised when the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) was given a Judges’ Citation Award for their ‘LM-80-08 Approved Method for Measuring Lumen Maintenance of LED Light Sources’ guidelines. A raft of LED products also won awards in the various luminaire categories.

The educational program, which started two days before the trade show floor opened with the Daylighting and Lightfair Institutes, offered the largest, most diverse courses and seminars to date with more than 220 hours of programming over five days. This year, 120 industry experts presented 75 sessions, addressing topics that covered lighting fundamentals, software, applications, controls and solutions, as well as design innovation, product updates and case studies.
