'Light Exhibition Design' to take place in Milan

12 October 2009 10.00 BST

(Italy) - A Festival of Light and Exhibition will take place from December 5th to January 10th.

Young talents and celebrated designers will transform Milan with light installations of contemporary art and design. More than 40 works of light will involve the city to furnish and adorn the ‘open air’ public urban spaces of the city – streets, squares, parks and monuments.

Some of the most celebrated contemporary international designers – Michele De Lucchi, Italo Rota, Paolo Rizzatto, Fabio Novembre, Mario Nanni, Paul Cocksedge, Akari-Lisa Ishii and Carole Ferreri, Alain Guilhot, Gilbert Moity, Patricia Urquiola - will take part in the festival.

LED - 'Light Exhibition Design' – is a project promoted by the City Council of Milan, Assessorato Arredo, Decoro Urbano e Verde under the sponsorship of ADI – Industrial Design Association, AIDI – Italian Association of Lighting, and in collaboration with media partners Corriere della Sera, ABITARE – Rcs Media Group, Luce&Design, LUCE, Lighting Design Collection, and mondo*arc magazine.

Partner of the project is the International Association L.U.C.I. - Lighting Urban Community International – a network that gathers cities and the professionals from all over the world to strengthen the urban lighting field.

A ‘City of Light’ made of light design settings, projections and objects of design furniture that will lead citizens and visitors to the discovery of a new vision of the city places, from the historical centre to the neighbourhood of Navigli, from the green areas to the nerve centres of the city, through a scenographical ‘open air’ circuit, will be showed through a trail of light composed by hundreds of totems.

The official opening ceremony of the festival of light will take place on Saturday December 5th with the presentation of the project at the prestigious seat of Palazzo Reale and with an opening event at Piazza Duomo. A conducted tour at sunset will lead visitors in the circuit; starting from the centre of Milan the visitors will watch the lighting of the installations and design settings. A detailed map will lead the spectators in the exhibition. The most beautiful light installation will then be chosen by the visitors.

Maurizio Cadeo, City Council Member of Assessorato Arredo, Decoro Urbano e Verde, declared: “This is a new appointment that involves all the representative subjects of design in an exemplary city that wants to ‘create a system’: from young talents to the most celebrated designers from Italy and abroad; from the world of education to the economic and productive one. A project able to promote an image of Milan in the world, not only in terms of visibility, but also in terms of identity, international character and culture.”
