Passionate Presentations at Lovelight

13 October 2009 16.00 GMT

(UK) - Lighting designers and architects came together at London’s Royal College of Physicians this October to share their passion for illumination. LoveLight - a free one-day event hosted by the Professional Lighting Designers’ Association in conjunction with Emap – comprised a series of interactive talks by eminent figures from the spheres of architecture, lighting and design.

True to it’s name, LoveLight was both a declaration and an invitation, encouraging all present to put lighting design at the heart of their work.
Never overly technical, often playful and largely thought provoking, the 16 speakers included lighting designers Jonathan Speirs of Speirs and Major Associates and Rogier van der Heide of Arup  plus architects Eva Jiricna, Laurie Chetwood and Magali Thomson. Themes raised included, the use of LEDs in modern lighting design, lighting for education, a renaissance in the use of natural light in modern architecture, and the importance of working with lighting designers to get advice on how building materials themselves will interact with light.

Breaking up the sessions were a series of video shorts, some focusing on examples of good lighting design, others like movie pastiche ‘Brokeback Lighting’ by Swedish lighting designers Erik Olsson and Joran Linder, were more light hearted. Olsson and Linder’s went on to talk about their work in the Swedish suburbs and how communities can be strengthened by engaging them in the process of lighting design.

The day sessions concluded with an interview of Architectural Association president Alex Lifschutz by CABE chairman Paul Finch.
An evening drinks reception included a Japanese-style series of quick-fire presentations – or PechaKucha - from 15 speakers. Architects’ Journal editor Kieran Long, Kinetica Art museum director Dianne Harris, light artists Jason Bruges and Martin Richman and lighting designers Tim Downey, Janet Turner, Martin Lupton, Paul Traynor, Vasiliki Malakasi. Admir Jukanovic, Maurice Brill, John Bullock, Sam Neuman, Colin Ball, Mary Rushton-Beales and Henrik Clausen all took part.

The event attracted over 260 architects and lighting designers over the course of the day, concluded with an exterior lighting workshop – led by Rowena Preiss, Creative Director of Philips - creating a guerrilla-style display in the gardens outside the college.
