Lighting think tank launched in New York

16 Aug 2011 10.00 BST

(USA) - Lighting experts come together to create PhoScope to promote photostudies as well as the conventions of lighting practice and education.

Officially launched in May 2011, the lighting think tank PhoScope is committed to 'transphotal research, design, and planning projects and to developing programs that facilitate change and advance critical lighting studies, practice and education'. The new terminology serves as a manifesto in a robust architecture-centric culture.

The think tank developed as a new area of focus and collaboration within director and founder Nathalie Rozot’s independent design projects and research on lighting ecosystems and global nightscapes. Rozot is joined by Francesca Bastianini of lighting design practice Lumen Architecture, Stephen Horner of lighting design consultancy MediumBase; and Miina Matsuoka, former Vice President of the renowned architectural lighting design firm L’Observatoire International.

This innovative photocentric©organization will engage in research and design proposals, public programs and publications. Current projects include Twice Out Of Paradise, an 'ecophotal' dance production that uses artistic and technical experimentation as an engine for positive social change in the context of environmental issues. This groundbreaking production will premiere in Chad in 2011.

Forward-thinking lighting designers and leaders within the design, academic and scientific communities comprise PhoScope Boards of Directors and Advisors. These include Roger Narboni, President of Concepteurs Lumière sans Frontières and Concepto; Maria Rosario Thompson, PhD, Principal Applications Scientist at Osram Sylvania; Olympia Kazi, Executive Director of the Van Alen Institute; Margaret Maile Petty, Deputy Head of School at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; Brian McGrath, Chair of Urban Design Research, School of Constructed Environments.

PhoScope was incorporated in 2011 with the Department of State of New York as a not-for-profit organization. Funding to support the organization will come from commissioned activities as well as individual, corporate and institutional sponsorship and contributions.
