Urbis to phase out high-volume manufacturing in UK

17 February 2012 11.30 GMT

(UK) - 120 jobs to go as exterior lighting manufacturer Urbis source LED luminaires from Schréder in Europe.

In a move towards more energy efficient LED based luminaires, Urbis will phase out its large-scale manufacture of HID luminaires at its Basingstoke site, sourcing most of its luminaires from Schréder factories in Europe from 2012 onwards. Urbis has been part of the Schréder group since 1977.

The move will mean the loss of about 120 employees, but the company will retain the ability to manufacture its decorative product range, develop prototypes and carry out special production runs.

The technical, sales, marketing, customer services, finance, supply chain and logistic operations and an enlarged product development function will remain based in Basingstoke. Urbis' increased focus on technical development will create more new products and help them target new market sectors.

Ian Pratt, Managing Director of Urbis, commented: “We are genuinely sorry for our employees affected by this move and the fact that this will be the end of high volume UK manufacturing for us, but it is a change we need to make to react to market forces.”

“We will ensure that the manufacturing change is totally seamless for our customers by operating parallel production facilities in the UK and the overseas factories. To maintain customer service levels, we will hold finished stock in the UK and make deliveries direct from our Basingstoke warehouse.”

Urbis has recently launched the Axia LED road light equipped with the new LensoFlex LED module.
