Artichoke announces LUMIERE festivals of light for Durham and Derry in 2013

25 October 2012 16.15 BST

(UK) - Creative company Artichoke has confirmed that it will bring its unique brand of magic to Durham and Derry in consecutive festivals next November.

Durham County Council has re-commissioned Artichoke to produce a third LUMIERE festival for Durham, following two successful editions in 2009 and 2011. LUMIERE in Durham will take place over four nights, 14-17 November 2013.

Artichoke has also been invited to stage LUMIERE as the closing event for Derry, UK City of Culture 2013, from 28 November – 1 December 2013.

Artichoke is known for its ground-breaking, large-scale, creative productions, which include The Sultan’s Elephant (2006), La Princesse (2007), Antony Gormley’s One & Other (2009), LUMIERE (2009, 2011) and Deborah Warner’s Peace Camp (2012).

The company established LUMIERE with a successful model in Durham in 2009. In 2011, LUMIERE attracted 150,000 visitors to see the city transformed by artworks  including an illuminated waterfall over the River Wear, a giant Snowdome encasing an equestrian statue, and an other-worldly fire garden inside Durham Cathedral. The spectacular success of LUMIERE in 2011 was estimated by independent researchers to have brought economic benefits worth £4.3m.

For 2013, the LUMIERE festivals in Durham and Derry will each be individually curated and programmed, with a mix of high profile artist commissions, local and community initiatives. Artists working in the medium of light in its many forms will be invited to use the cities as their canvas. Artichoke will work with local communities in Derry and Durham to achieve a lasting legacy. Programme details for each festival will be revealed next year.

Nicky Webb, co-director of Artichoke said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been re-commissioned by Durham County Council to create the third LUMIERE for Durham. And we are thrilled to have been invited to create LUMIERE as the finale for Derry-Londonderry UK City of Culture 2013. Both are wonderfully interesting cities whose architecture and topography lend themselves perfectly to an innovative and exciting festival like this. We believe that these events have the potential not only to temporarily transform these cities, but also to give residents and visitors a joyful and unifying shared experience they will remember forever.”

Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Council said: “I am sure both Derry-Londonderry and Durham will be spectacular events. LUMIERE has been a huge success when it has been staged here and people will already be putting the dates into their diaries to ensure they do not miss out.”

Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of Culture Company 2013 said: "We know that LUMIERE will be one of the 'wow' projects of 2013, a moment of light and magic that will live on in the hearts and minds of the people of Derry and the thousands of visitors to the city. It is a joy to be working with Artichoke and their creative response to the story and landscape of this particular city is hugely anticipated."
