Jonathan Speirs Scholarship Fund launched

8 November 2012 12.00 GMT

(UK) - Friends of the late lighting designer Jonathan Speirs have launched a scholarship fund to provide support to students of architecture who wish to enter the architectural lighting profession.

The Jonathan Speirs Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Speirs, who lost his long battle with cancer in June of this year.

The scholarship aims to raise funding from the architectural lighting profession, architectural and engineering professions, various professional associations concerned with the promotion and development of lighting design, from the lighting industry and from companies and individuals who wish to make a contribution.

Speirs, regarded as one of the world’s leading architectural lighting designers, is widely acknowledged as not only having been a pioneer of the profession of architectural lighting design in the UK but also a considerable influence on the work of a generation of lighting designers across the world. He recognised that although the profession was growing rapidly, opportunities for formal education in architectural lighting remained somewhat limited. At his behest, the Jonathan Speirs Scholarship Fund has been set up with the view to specifically allowing ‘A Student of Architecture to investigate the study of Architectural Lighting Design prior to seeking a permanent move into that field as a career’.

The Jonathan Speirs Scholarship Fund is being established as registered charitable trust.

Those wishing to donate can find further details by downloading the JSSF information sheet, or emailing
