(UK) - May Design Series hosts design seminar program that incorporates all elements of design. Lighting design topics are at the forefront...

As part of the May Design Series taking place at ExCeL London, from 19-21 May, there will be a whole host of unmissable industry figures to see and hear from at the free CPD accredited Conversation Series programme sponsored by Crosswater, including leading designer Karim Rashid. Aiming to stimulate, inform, inspire and provoke, the Conversation Series is sure to get tongues wagging! We’ve put together a sneak preview of just some of the key lighting focussed sessions that will be going on:

Opening the entire Conversation Series, Peter Earle, Philips Lighting LED guru and Paul Nulty, lighting designer extraordinaire discuss, debate and deliberate lighting design, light source technologies and the current state of the industry, as well as advising on How to vvoid a lighting design ‘Kitchen Nightmare’ by using the right ingredients. Listen in on Sunday 19 May at 12.15.

Roger Sexton (Xicato) and Mark Sutton-Vane (Sutton-Vane Associates) discuss art gallery lighting with Boris Pretzel, Head Scientist at the V&A Museum, debating the perils of lighting museums and galleries, the ultimate light-sensitive environments. They will also tackle the recent van Gogh masterpiece LED lighting research controversy that was so badly reported by the majority of the lighting and mainstream press. Find out what happens when they light up exhibitions for the public in their fascinating talk, Gallery Lighting: Does LED Destroy Masterpieces? Take it all in on Monday 20 May at 11.15.

Michael Grubb, Creative Director of Michael Grubb Studio, explains how the two disciplines of interior design and lighting design can work together to create the best schemes for the client in his session Design Without Borders: Interior Designer? Meet the Lighting Designer on Tuesday 21 May at 13.15.

Good lighting design is a vital component of hospitality environments, with different requirements needed in bars, circulation spaces and bedrooms. Peter Veale (Firefly Lighting Design) gives a detailed account of good design in successful hotels and restaurants with his discussion entitled, Hotel Lighting with the Wow Factor. See him on Tuesday 21 May at 11.15.

Karim Rashid, one of the most prolific designers of his generation, will host a keynote session and then take to the decks to DJ at the late night opening on Monday 20th May. His Conversation Series talk, Analogue vs Digital at 3.15, will discuss how the move from analogue to digital has changed the material world and how it will inform design decisions and alter social behaviours.
