May Design Series hailed a success

(UK) - Over 10,000 visitors to inaugural May Design Series event consisting of The ARC Show, DX, Interiors and kbb.

The inaugural May Design Series event - consisting of The ARC Show, DX, Interiors and kbb - delivered a new way for London designers, architects and specifiers to find everything they needed to specify for their projects. The exhibition provided visitors with the perfect opportunity to make informed purchasing decisions at the end of the European show season.

The show attracted over 10,000 industry professionals including those from B&Q, Conran and Partners, Arup, C.P. Hart, Foster + Partners, Speirs + Major, John Lewis, Hoare Lea, Tesco and Zaha Hadid Architects to name but a few.

Pulled in by big brands and up and coming companies, visitors were able to meet the likes of Timorous Beasties, Justin Van Breda, Ligne Roset, D*Haus, Poggenpohl, Leicht, ERCO and iGuzzini.

DX Freight provided an opportunity to see a showcase of the very best products selected by industry editors. Drawing the attention of visitors as they entered the exhibition, the large and impressive shipping style crates featured bright and colourful interiors decked out with a selection of exciting products from world renowned brands. The curated selection included everything from furniture and mirrors, to chairs, fabrics, lighting and accessories.

There are some brilliant leading and up-and-coming brands to see, and the industrial style crates are the perfect setting”

The ARC Show exhibitors benefited from the wider pool of visitors from the design and specification community rather than just the usual faces from the lighting industry. There was even a surprise appearance by TV property developer Sarah Beeny who specified some lighting from German brand LED Linear for an upcoming TV programme!

Ian Stanton, Sales & Marketing Director at iGuzzini UK, was delighted with the first show: “The ARC Show was a tremendous success for iGuzzini in that it exposed our brand to clients that we didn’t know, due to the pull of the May Design Series and other shows within the show, such as KBB and DX, and it also enabled us to showcase our new LED products to those clients we do know. It was also great to have the opportunity to accommodate members of the IALD on our stand for drinks during the extended opening hours of Monday evening. We now have a busy, and hopefully productive time ahead of us following up all the leads and catalogue requests!”

Chris Tiernan, Managing Director of ERCO UK, commented: “One of the primary reasons we were initially interested in doing the show was the diversity of designers that might attend. We were entirely happy with the level of footfall to our stand and more importantly some interesting opportunities to develop.”

The late night opening on Monday brought visitors and exhibitors together to toast to the show’s success in the DX bar, kick started by Musicity’s session. It provided a relaxed setting for industry professionals to cement business relationships and get to know each other over a few drinks. The renowned international designer Karim Rashid brought a touch of glamour to the event, taking to the decks to entertain the crowds into the night.

In addition to the exhibitor’s stands, visitors were also able to take advantage of the exhibition’s feature areas. The show provided insightful and thought-provoking CPD accredited seminars, including an unmissable keynote session from prolific designer, Karim Rashid, with queues formed in anticipation and crowds spilling into the aisles.

Seminars were streamed live online and watched by thousands around the globe. There was something for everyone across various sectors of the design industry. Lighting professionals Paul Nulty and Peter Earle discussed the ingredients necessary for well-balanced ambient lighting design; Hugh Broughton, Christina Seilern and Tomas Rousek wowed the audience with their ground breaking work in the polar regions, equatorial Africa and space reflectively; a panel of experts from companies including Gensler, Herman Miller, AHMM and MAKE Architects contemplated the changing face of workplace design, and Martyn Evans of Cathedral set out to answer the question that resonates with all architects: What do developers want?

Providing a worldwide platform, the Global Design Blogger meet up had bloggers at the May Design Series sharing their findings with bloggers simultaneously attending the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) in New York City. Organised by the May Design Series and online interior design resource Modenus.com, the prominent blogger Bright Bazaar shared his trend insights at the show from Poggenpohl’s stand.

The May Design Series has firmly put itself on the map for the future European show cycle for the time-and design conscious with its convenient single destination for related design events.

UBM brand director Andy Vaughan remarked, “The first May Design Series has now traded and it has exceeded our Year 1 expectations hugely. The vision was to achieve London’s first great looking but also commercial design trade show and on the whole this has gone very much to plan. It has been very rewarding to have received so many compliments from exhibitors, visitors, designers and key industry press and associations on how great the show looked and how our new layout and attention to detail made the whole experience enjoyable and functional. Equally as important and gratifying was the report on how much business was achieved. Our immediate feedback has indicated the majority of exhibitors have surpassed their business targets and really encouragingly many actually signed substantial business deals actually at the show which is a huge success for us all. This is a great platform to keep achieving greater things and really put London interiors back on the global map where it belongs.”
