Blackpool launches Indoor Illuminations

23 October 2013 15.30 BST

(UK) - New multi-million pound lighting initiative to boost UK holiday resort economy all year round from April 2014.

Blackpool is famous for its spectacular annual illuminations and from April 2014 visitors to the resort will be able to see the spectacular Indoor Illuminations in the Olympia Arena, at the Winter Gardens.

Featuring over 450 lighting structures, over five levels covering 45,000 square metres, the “world class” attraction, will be the first of its kind anywhere in Europe. Two of the features - Land of the Giants and the Planetarium are newly developed and have never been seen before anywhere in the world.

Adapting Chinese lantern crafts with LED technology, visitors will be able to enjoy the attraction Blackpool is most famous for, not only up close and personal but indoors in weather proof comfort, which will be open all, day, every day, all year round.

The Indoor Illuminations is being brought to Blackpool by the world-renowned ‘ISA - International Special Attractions' Group, based in Shanghai and Los Angeles and UK co-producer Jon Conway.

Jon Conway told mondo*arc, “Having produced summer shows in the town for twenty years I am delighted to bring this fantastic new year round attraction to my favourite place. Blackpool is set for a regeneration and I want to be part of it.”

Michael Williams, Managing Director of the Winter Gardens commented, “Olympia is an amazing space within the Winter Gardens and we are absolutely delighted to be hosting something which is so unique in the venue. Blackpool has always been synonymous with spectacular lighting displays and this world class exhibition will provide another reason for people to visit, come rain or shine.”

Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said, “This in an incredibly exciting project for 2014 which brings with it a proven international track record and a reputation for quality. This is the type of attraction that only an expansive and diverse events' space like the Winter Gardens can accommodate. I'm extremely excited to see the final attraction and I'm sure many others are too.”

The exhibition will also feature a number of bespoke pieces for the resort, which will allow the town to unfold in lights inside the space. In addition each hour the venue will be plunged into darkness and one lucky visitor will be able to press the switch to turn on the lights again.

The exhibition also promises to provide an added boost to tourism and local employment.

The paid-for attraction will open to the public on Friday April 18 and will be open all year round.
