Light IQ hit African fundraising target

5 February 2014 10.30 GMT

(UK) - Design consultancy to provide funds to install solar kits in Chigawi School in the Mzuzu district in Northern Malawi.

Light IQ became the first lighting design consultancy to partner and fundraise for SolarAid, who won the Google Global Impact Award in 2013. The charity has adopted an innovative approach to providing clean affordable solar lighting for rural, off the grid schools and pupils in sub-Saharan Africa.

Teachers and pupils at the Chigawi School were very excited at the prospect of having solar lighting installed in their school. Many of the students live in homes without electricity so the opportunity to study at a school with a solar-lit classroom will be transformational.

The lighting kits provided consist of four strip lights, two hanging lights and a spotlight.

“This is a breakthrough approach to lighting classrooms in rural Africa replacing traditional, toxic and expensive kerosene lights” said Rebecca Weir, Light IQ design director.

Only 9% of people in rural sub-Saharan Africa have access to electricity, with the average family spending up to 25% of their income on toxic kerosene for lighting. The charity’s aim is to eradicate kerosene from Africa by 2020 and get a clean light in every home in Africa.

The arrival of solar light will have a direct impact on the amount of study hours children at the school can partake in, improving exam results, as well as encouraging local people to take teaching exams.

Richard Turner, director of fundraising and marketing at SolarAid commented, “We are delighted to be partnering with Light IQ who share our passion for a brighter future. Their fund-raising efforts to solar light Chigawi School will have a dramatic impact on this community”.
