Auroralia Award 2014 open for entries

28 August 2014 12.00 BST

(Belgium) - A global platform for towns and cities to share initiatives in sustainable urban lighting organised by Schréder and LUCI.

As the only award to promote sustainable lighting solutions, the Auroralia Award attracts entries from all over the world and provides an unparalleled opportunity to gain exposure for your work and promote the best in pioneering lighting design. Now in its sixth year, it will reward three cities that have committed to sustainable urban lighting using advanced solutions. An independent jury composed of journalists, chosen for their expertise in urban lighting, town planning and sustainable development will single out projects that are ahead of the curve. The winners will be rewarded at the prize ceremony on 6th December in Lyon during the prestigious Light Festival.

A joint initiative of the Schréder Group and LUCI, the Auroralia Award is an annual reward given to three cities that have completed high-quality exterior lighting projects that have reduced their impact on the environment in the most noticeable, exemplary and original way. Through this award, Schréder and LUCI wish to highlight the commendable projects of the prize-winning entries, which serve as real sources of inspiration for as many cities as possible.

For the first five editions, no less than 97 cities or urban communities submitted one or more applications. This is a remarkably successful participation rate which confirms the increasing commitment of local authorities to minimise the ecological footprint of urban lighting. The quality of the applications submitted to the independent jury from the international specialised press showed that, thanks to recent technological developments, this concern for the environment is fully compatible with the primary goals of urban lighting: providing quality of life and well-being, asserting a city's identity and creating an atmosphere of safety in public spaces.

Past winners have included large metropolises such as Berlin, Los Angeles and London as well as more modestly sized towns such as Arraiolos (Portugal), Ghent (Belgium) and Ibarra (Ecuador).

In these challenging economic times, towns and cities have to dig deep to deliver sustainable lighting solutions without neglecting safety and comfort.

By submitting your application, you will have the opportunity to:
• Win €6,000 prize money to reinvest in your city/town
• Share your sustainable energy technologies and practices
• Raise the profile and improve the image of your city/town
• Gain recognition for your work
• Have your project assessed by a distinguished international jury
• Attract media and make headlines by have your project published in many international trade magazines and press specialising in urban lighting, town planning and sustainable development.

Applications are free and can be submitted until 17th October.
