Obituary: Riccardo Sarfatti

(Italy) - On 10 September, Luceplan founder Riccardo Sarfatti died in a tragic car accident.

Inspired by the democratic principle of “beauty for all”, Riccardo Sarfatti’s dream was to build better places to live in through lighting. His visionary approach succeeded in sparking enthusiasm for experimentation in many designers.

Riccardo Sarfatti earned his degree in Architecture from the Politecnico in Milan in 1965.

From 1968 until 1985 he worked as an assistant and professor at the Politecnico in Milano and at the Institute of Architecture of the University of Venice.

He was the son of Gino Sarfatti, one of the pioneers in Italian design, founder of Arteluce, a historic Italian lighting manufacturer. Riccardo Sarfatti worked at Arteluce from 1964 to 1978, while continuing his university activities.

In 1979 he founded, with Paolo Rizzatto and Sandra Severi, Luceplan, of which he was the Managing Director until 2004 and then Executive Director until his death. He was also the Chairman of the Board of companies associated with Luceplan, operating in both production and distribution in various geographical areas. Over the years, Luceplan earned recognition as one of the leading Italian companies in the world of design for its innovative capacity and the quality of its research and proposals, winning important international awards.

Riccardo Sarfatti wrote numerous articles and papers published by specialised trade journals and was often invited to speak at conferences and participate in debates on design issues and lighting worldwide. Following his candidacy to become President of the Region of Lombardy in the 2005 regional elections, he remained active in politics as a Regional Councillor, representing the Partito Democratico.

He also held leadership positions in various Associations. From 1994 to 2002 he represented Italian decorative lighting manufacturers at the C.E.L.M.A. (Committee of E.U. Luminaires Manufacturers Associations) and from 1997 until June 2002; he was the President of Assoluce, the Italian association of lighting manufacturers, and Vice-President of Federlegno-Arredo.

From July 1999 to 2005, he was the President of CNAD (National Council of Association for Design).

In April 2002, he created and promoted the web site From April 2003 to January 2005 he was a member of the Presidential Committee of Libertà & Giustizia.

From 2007 to 2008 he was the President of the Association for the Partito Democratico della Lombardia.

Riccardo Sarfatti died in Tremezzo on 10 September 2010.
