YLP Team Wins ‘Ready Steady Light’ Prize

29 March 2011 12.00 BST

(UK) - A team of six Young Lighting Professionals proved themselves a match for a number of more experience lighting designers at the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP) Ready Steady Light competition.

The annual event took place on March 16 at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, Kent, with the Young Lighting Professionals (YLP) team winning the Technical Prize, in addition to coming joint second in the Peer Prize category.

Eleven teams took part in this year’s competition, run by the Society of Light and Lighting, many of them vastly experienced lighting professionals of many years’ standing. The event gives each team three hours to design and create an exterior lighting scene at an allotted site, using just six pieces of lighting equipment. The competition is judged in three categories; Best Creative Effort; Best Technical Solution; and the Peer Prize judged by the other entrants.

The YLP team, consisting of Lora Kaleva, Kristina Allison, Nicholas Griffin, Rebecca Davis, Scott Pengelly and Tom Baynham, were taking part in Ready Steady Light for only the second time.

The YLP team was allocated the site ‘Behind the Principal’s Office’ – and following an early concept brainstorm and experimentation with some of the light sources and gels, the team decided to draw on the features of the building, and the surrounding plant life, using minimalistic lighting and shadows. The winning result was a serene but slightly eerie scene entitled ‘The Moon Lit Cemetery’.
