Iannone new PLDA president as Giladi resigns

12 April 2011 11.00 BST

(Germany) - Francesco Iannone, founder and past president of ELDA, is elected unopposed as the president of the Professional Lighting Designers Association as another past president, Gad Giladi, resigns.

Francesco Iannone, who heads the Italian lighting design practice Consuline, has been elected unopposed as the new president of the PLDA in an attempt to calm the storm of recent times following a spate of high profile resignations.

The latest resignation has come from past president of ELDA, Gad Giladi, who stated that: “I no longer feel this association represents me nor do I feel it any longer works for the benefit of its members and the profession.”

More resignations are expected from members unhappy with recent events and uneasy with the perceived undemocratic voting process for the new president but Iannone will be seen as a safe pair of hands to guide the PLDA through choppy waters.

Iannone, who was president of ELDA between 1999 and 2003, said in his presidential vision statement: “PLDA today is like a kid becoming an adult. This kid is passing from adolescence to adulthood. IT'S A DIFFICULT STAGE: I'd like to be able to accompany him in this passage, because Europe is waiting for him to deliver him officially a profession... [The] lighting design must open to new horizons, the lighting field is in front of a critical panorama. I'd like to give my contribution as a ferryman from one bank to the other.”

Iannone has been working with lighting design and industrial design applied to lighting for 25 years. Since graduating in Architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1975, he has devoted all his efforts exclusively to lighting. In 1986, he founded the Consuline office in Milan, where he works with Serena Tellini. Here he combines his focus on designing luminaires, both for serial production and for special custom cases, with architectural lighting design. He created the lighting concept for the Formula 1 circuit in Shanghai and has designed products for Fosnova, Targetti, Sames, Tecnopali, Fivep-Cariboni, Artemide, VLM, Prisma/ Performance in Lighting and OYlight.

There was disquiet in some quarters that Iannone was the only presidential candidate. (Of those eligible, 40 voted for with 8 against and 3 abstaining.) However, none of the other nominees were willing to put their name forward for the election. There is currently no president-elect position following the recent presidential resignations of Martin Lupton and Georgios Paissidis (who has now also resigned from the PLDA as a member).
