Royal approval for Harvard

19 May 2011 16.30 BST

(UK) - Harvard's new manufacturing facility and offices officially opened by HRH The Duke of Kent on Thursday 12th May and also presented Harvard with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise, within the innovation category.

Harvard was awarded the Queen’s Award for its innovative wireless street lighting management system, LeafNut, that is helping Local Councils and private businesses around the UK cut energy usage and reduce carbon emissions. LeafNut allows Local Authorities to cleverly manage their street lights without having to controversially ‘switch off’.
The company, which has experienced significant growth over the last two years, increasing employee numbers from 100 to 210, grew too large for its previous premises and made the move to Normanton in Wakefield.

The industry leading facility includes a world class research and development centre, which would be the envy of any Silicon Valley company, where all the company’s innovative ideas will be realised into new products and solutions. The premises also include a manufacturing facility with the most advanced automated assembly equipment in the industry.

Harvard develops innovative and efficient lighting solutions for commercial, retail, emergency and street lighting applications. Products include LED drivers, which efficiently control LED lights as well as the innovative LeafNut remote wireless street lighting solution.
The popular LeafNut Central Management System (CMS) was fully manufactured in the UK and is currently adopted by more than 40 Local Authorities worldwide, with 400,000 LeafNut controlled street lights being deployed and 100,000 already in operation.

Michael McDonnell, sales and marketing director at Harvard, commented: “It is an honour to have HRH The Duke of Kent open our new premises and present our Queen’s Award. As a growing company, it is very exciting to have such a high profile guest marking the occasion with us.  Despite the current recession, we are anticipating our growth will continue in 2011 and 2012, at an even faster pace.

Most Local Authorities are now aware of the undoubted benefits of using innovative applications like LeafNut to manage their street lights and we have combined this technology with our new LeafNut Enabled LED Driver to offer a LeafNut LED solution.”
