Netting Light

Heather Gillespie

Added: Oct 2011*

The Rope Grown collection is based on how mussels and oysters are grown for our consumption. Being brought up by the seashore has given me an understanding of the ocean and how powerful it can be and what it provides for us.

"Holding over a million baby oysters in my hand at a local Mussel and Oyster farm in Cumbria, I had the chance to see how these creatures are bread for the mass market in France," says creator Heather Gillespie. "It seems such a shame that the majority of these tasty treats go abroad to feed other nations."

Heather Gillespie is a glass designer and maker who creates unique glass products for interiors. Using a 16th century technique of glass engraving heather applies patterns and imagery to the surface of glass. Only a handful of people still practice this craft today in the UK. Gillespie was self taught before persuing this craft in more depth in the Czech Bohemian mountains in a small village named Kamenicky Senov. This was a worth while trip for Gillespie who gained valuable knowledge. Since returning back Heathers business Gillespie Glass has become an emporium for bespoke and unique glassware. Interior designers/architects and private clients commission Gillespie to design lighting or vessels to their brief.
