VIDEO CONTENT: International visitors arriving in New York the old-fashioned way have been treated to a very modern experience following a recent refurbishment to Pier 88 and 90.

As part of the upgrade for the two piers - the docking points for cruise ships visiting Manhattan - NYCruise and the NYC Economic Development Corporation commissioned a new signage façade in order to provide a visual landmark and enhance the profile of the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

Focus Lighting collaborated with designers and engineers to create the new signs.

Like a true New Yorker, these signs come alive at nightfall and put on a show until the early hours of the morning using only energy efficient, long life LED sources.

For each pier, 400 feet of linear RGB LED strips with narrow optics were used to graze the front of articulated, perforated panels. For the signage characters themselves, 7,500 RGB LED nodes backlight the acrylic letter faces and provide a halo glow behind the letters. The LEDs are also able to produce low resolution video effects that provide a kinetic element to the sign.

The evening starts with a dynamic depiction of the sunset over the Hudson River, transitioning to a branded show for NYCruise and the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Every hour the signage numbers morph into a Lighthouse beacon, and on the half hour, passers-by are treated to an organic water inspired show.

Each element on the sign is individually controllable (letter faces, halo, perforated panels and road bed) for a near infinite number of colour combinations.

The system is controlled by a Light System Manager from Philips Color Kinetics, with an Interactive Technologies Cue Server to trigger daily playback. All content and programming was done by Focus Lighting.
The signs can also be user-controlled to provide brand identity for Norwegian and Carnival Cruise Lines when their ships are in port. For holidays and special events, any combination of user selected colours can be displayed.
