Firefly Lighting Design has answered the call for a contemporary look to Hong Kong’s newest boutique hotel.

Opened in October 2006, The Fleming, located on the street of the same name, has answered the call for a chic, urban, lifestyle hotel close to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre that regularly holds the International Lighting Fair as well as other major trade shows.
Run by the highest ranking tennis player in the history of Hong Kong, John Hui, many of the features are based on his unique perspective on the hotel experience having spent fifteen years living out of a suitcase as he travelled the world contesting tournaments.
“I travelled week in week out for nine months of the year, hopping from one hotel to another in all types of hotels, from 0-star hostels in Brunei to ultra-luxurious resorts in Bora Bora,” Hui explained.
His experiences and insights are now being applied to The Fleming concept as “home from home” for frequent travellers. This extends to high-tech facilities for professionals with all 66 rooms offering plasma TV, wireless broadband internet and cordless phones.
In February this year the hotel launched a unique concept for the city, an all ladies floor of rooms called Her Space. All rooms are purposefully decorated and equipped with high quality bedding, furry cushions, silk draperies and fur rugs to cater for the female traveller!
“The Fleming has its finger on the pulse of the specific expectations of the modern female traveller, in particular those travelling alone,” says Hui. “We made the decision to establish Hong Kong’s first and only dedicated floor for ladies based upon feedback and research conducted during the development of the hotel.”
yi & associates limited was responsible for both the conversion of the hotel from serviced apartments and the interior design of - their approach had to reflect the executive concept of the brief. Stylish and spacious design is minimalist yet cosy with high ceilings and Italian marble.
London-based lighting design company Firefly was given the task of creating a modern look for the hotel.
“The architect, Yvonne Ieong from yi & associates limited gave us a brief to create a very contemporary hotel where it would stand out amongst the more traditional hotels in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong,” commented Peter Veale of Firefly. “We actually started our design from the outside, giving lines of light (using long-lasting Philips LEDline 2 fittings) to each level and ending the lines in a jade green ‘flick’ of light.”
This gives the hotel a floating appearance when approaching from afar and is something that continues the closer you get. At street level wall-mounted up/downlights punctuate the pavement avoiding glare that would otherwise distract from the views into the lobby and reception.
Inside, the emphasis is in accenting the modern materials used: the glass reception desk, the columns, and the disabled ramp. The floating concept is continued with LED lighting within the lobby steps to the lift.
“In the lift lobby we provided concealed coves that are interactive with the lifts, thus giving the guests another indication that their carriage awaits,” Veale reveals.
The intimate restaurant on the Lobby Level, Cubix, benefits from anti-glare downlights to light the tables, while decorative shades provide a visual layer of light on the ceiling and walls. All the lighting is dimmable to create mood and atmosphere at night.
